Every year, Ambry Genetics sponsors The Mauli Ola Foundation (MOF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing hope and confidence for individuals living with genetic diseases, specifically Cystic Fibrosis (CF). MOF harnesses the healing powers of the ocean by introducing surf and ocean-based activities as natural therapies to people all across the United States. They do this through their Surf Experience Days, in which pro surfers offer free lessons to CF patients and visit those in hospitals who are unable to make it out to the water.
This year, MOF invited the Ambry Genetics community outreach manager Tiffany Au to join them on their Surf Experience Day tour of the Eastern and Southern US Coasts. Tiffany will travel alongside MOF’s team of professional athletes and participate in this year’s activities. During Surf Experience Days, participants gather and choose an athlete or an instructor to surf with. Depending on their level of experience, the rider may work through some land exercises with the athlete or instructor to help build their confidence. The pair then takes off and hits the water to catch waves, most riding tandem on a single board. Lunch is graciously provided by local partnered restaurants or sponsoring businesses.
Tiffany will also be attending hospital visits, which typically last around two hours. Athletes visit children bedside take part in playroom hangouts. During playroom visits, the athletes guide an art activity with the kids, sign posters, converse and have free play!
“The athletes and I are looking forward to an experience that allows us to see firsthand the immediate impact MOF will have on people living with genetic conditions,” said Tiffany. “It’s not common for non-profit organizations to provide this level of involvement to their corporate sponsors, and we couldn’t be more excited to join the MOF tour.”
The tour begins in Wrightsville, NC on July 6th and will end in Corpus Christi, Texas on July 16th. Below is the complete tour schedule:
