The Journey of a Sample: Honoring the People Behind the Process at Ambry Genetics

Every April during Lab Week, we pause to celebrate the people whose work powers every test result, every insight, and every life changed through genetic testing. At Ambry Genetics, that celebration runs deep—because it truly takes a village.

This year for Lab Week, we are spotlighting something special: the full journey of a sample, and the incredible teams—seen and unseen—who bring that journey to life.

The Life Cycle of a Sample

Step 1: Arrival & Accessioning

The moment a sample arrives at Ambry, our accessioning team springs into action. Each vial is checked, logged, and verified to ensure everything is accurate and traceable. It's not just data entry—it's the foundation of trust for the entire process.

Step 2: Lab Sample Processing

Next, the sample moves into the lab, where our clinical laboratory scientists and technicians extract DNA and/or RNA and perform rigorous quality control and downstream assay testing. These experts handle each sample with care, ensuring it's viable and ready for analysis.

Step 3: Sequencing & Bioinformatics

Once the DNA is ready, it’s sequenced using cutting-edge technology. Our bioinformatics team then processes the massive amounts of data generated—transforming raw genetic code into usable, meaningful information.

Step 4: Clinical Interpretation

That data is then reviewed by clinical and genomic scientists, who assess whether any of the identified genetic changes may have clinical significance. This step combines science, medicine, and critical thinking.

Step 5: Reporting Results

In the last step, final results are compiled into a personalized clinical report— turning complex data into insights that are easy to understand and use for patients and providers alike.

The Teams Behind the Scenes

While the lab is the heart of the sample’s journey, it’s far from a solo act. Ambry’s success depends on a powerful, interconnected ecosystem of professionals working behind the scenes: ClinDx, R&D, Advanced Analytics, IT-Ops, IT-Dev, Quality, Supply Chain & Procurement, Facilities, Medical Affairs, PMO, Finance, People’s Team, Client Solutions.

These teams may not always touch a sample— but their fingerprints are all over every result we deliver.
